Job Description
Volunteer Firefighter
General Statement of Duties: General firefighting work in combating, extinguishing and preventing fires. The primary duty shall be to protect the life and property of the inhabitants of the Town of Wallingford. This work requires performing hazardous tasks under difficult and unpleasant conditions; responding to alarms with a Company; (may) drive and operate various kinds of apparatus; lay and connect hose; hold nozzles and direct fog or water streams raise and climb ladders; use fire extinguishers; use bars, hooks, lines(ropes) and other equipment; ventilate burning building by opening windows and skylights or by cutting holes in roof and floors; remove persons from danger and administer emergency medical care to injured persons; performing salvage operations such as applying salvage covers, sweeping water and removing debris; participate in fire training drills’ and performing related work as assigned.
Supervision Received: Works under immediate direction of superior officer or senior member in charge.
Supervision Exercised: Usually none, but may be required to act in the position of Company Officer if firefighter is the senior person on the scene of an emergency.
Knowledge and skill ability: Ability to acquire and use efficiently a variety of information pertaining to firefighting and fire control; ability to become proficient in the care and use of firefighting equipment; knowledgeable in use of emergency medical equipment; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions; ability to think quickly and act decisively in emergency situations.
Experience and Training: All members must comply with the following minimum qualifications prior to being assigned duties on the fireground:
- Certified firefighter-1 (OSHA 1910.56)
- Certified Hazardous Materials Awareness (OSHA 1910.20)
- Certified Hazardous Materials Operational (OSHA 1940.120)
- Certified in Blood-borne Pathogens (OSHA 1910.30)
- Must attend 24 hours of training annually in not less than drills
- Must demonstrate annually, proficiency in use of SCBA
- Certified MRT Course
- Must achieve any and all other certifications required by the Wallingford Department of
Fire and Emergency Services Standard Operating Procedures.
New Member Program
A. Purpose
- The goal of this program is to provide a standardized method of accepting new members into the fire department. New members will be accepted in compliance with all laws and standards.
- This program will include the following elements:
- Application/investigation (per company by-laws)
- Acceptance
- Physical examination
- Training
- Utilization
B. Program
- Application/Investigation: This process will be done in accordance with Volunteer Company bylaws. This process shall be in compliance with all labor laws.
- Acceptance: Acceptance shall be granted to new members in accordance with Volunteer Company bylaws. New members shall not be permitted to respond to emergency calls until they have satisfied the training requirements stated in the job description for Volunteer Firefighters.
- Physical: The Wallingford Department of Fire and Emergency Services will provide Probationary members with a physical prior to commencing training or fire fighting duties.
- Training: New members will be required to complete a recruit fire training program or equivalent which included the following:
- Firefighter 1(OSHA 1910.156)
- Haz-Mat First Responder Operational (OSHA 1910.120)
- Blood Borne Pathogens Training (OSHA 1910.1030)
- Successful completion of a Medical Response Technician (MRT) course.
- Utilization: Upon successfully completing the training requirements, recruit members will be able to respond to all dispatched incidents with their respective Company.
Physical Requirements: Applicant must be at least 18 years old. Applicant shall be free of any Category- A conditions, as defined by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1582 Standard on Medical Requirements for Firefighters, that would prevent applicant from performing the duties of a firefighter. Category-B conditions, as defined by NFPA 1582, shall be evaluated on a case by case basis. Applicant will be given a physical prior to attending fire school or being assigned to duties on the fireground. Applicant will be offered the Hepatitis-B vaccination within 60 days of assignment to emergency operation.
